Judaism came to India in 6th Century BC at the Malabar Coast. These were a shipload of White Jews from Roman occupied Jerusalem. The next major emigrants came in 1st AD. Paradeshi Synagogue in the Matancherri Jew town of Cochin dates back to 1568 AD. In 379 AD the Cochin rulers granted special privileges to one Jewish merchant named Joseph Rabban and these are recorded in copper plates, which go to prove how the Hindu rulers of Malabar kingdom honoured the tolerance of an alien religion. There are three distinct sects of Jews in India
1. The Bene Israel
2. The Baghdadi Jews
3. The Cochin Jews
With the formation of the state of Israel, mass Jewish migration has reduced the Jewish settlements to small pockets.
