Situated in the eastern state of Assam, Kazirang’s history dates back to 1908 but it was not declared a national park unti11974. It is a stunningly beautiful area in the green and fertile plains beside the mighty Brahmaputra River, and at the foot of the Eastern Himalayas. It is famous for the great Indian one-horned rhinoceros (on-the brink of extinction 50 years ago) and for wild buffalo, hog and swamp deer (also a threatened species until recently). Tiger sightings are common. Access to Kaziranga is by a road journey along the Brahmaputra, from Guwahati (reached by air from Delhi, Calcutta or Bagdogra). The park is open from November to 30 June.
