Situated
on the eastern fringes of Kerala, Periyar was established in 1934
and covers an area of 774sq kms. The park comprises the rolling
hills of the Western Ghats, which support rich and varied flora
and fauna. The area open to the public centres around the 26sq kms
lake and game viewing is done by boat, gliding through the water,
observing the abundant birds and wildlife. Birdwatching and elephant
viewing are excellent and tiger sightings are possible but rare.
Access to Periyar is by road from Cochin, the 'Backwaters', Thekkady,
Madurai or Kodaikanal. The park is open all year and the best times
to visit are from September to May.
